Bazi (八字, pronounced “bah-dzuh”) means “eight characters” in Chinese. It’s a 2,000-year-old system that reads your destiny from eight characters — one for the year, one for the month, one for the day, and one for the hour of your birth. Think of it as the Eastern equivalent of a natal chart.
The four pillars
- Year pillar: your “early life” and family roots
- Month pillar: your career and social identity
- Day pillar: your core self and your marriage (!!!)
- Hour pillar: your children, later life, and hidden potential
Each pillar has two parts: a “Heavenly Stem” (one of 10 yin/yang element combos) and an “Earthly Branch” (one of the 12 zodiac animals). 4 pillars × 2 parts = 8 characters. Hence the name.
The Day Master: your core identity
The most important of the eight characters is your Day Master (日主) — the Heavenly Stem of your Day pillar. It’s one of these 10:
- Jia Wood (甲): Strong tree. Upright, ambitious, leadership.
- Yi Wood (乙): Flower / vine. Graceful, adaptive, persistent.
- Bing Fire (丙): Sun. Generous, optimistic, charismatic.
- Ding Fire (丁): Candle. Thoughtful, refined, nurturing.
- Wu Earth (戊): Mountain. Stable, protective, conservative.
- Ji Earth (己): Garden soil. Nurturing, detail-oriented.
- Geng Metal (庚): Sword. Bold, just, action-oriented.
- Xin Metal (辛): Jewelry. Sophisticated, sensitive, aesthetic.
- Ren Water (壬): Ocean. Resourceful, expansive, wise.
- Gui Water (癸): Rain. Intuitive, mysterious, adaptable.

The Five Elements (五行)
All eight characters reduce down to five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. A balanced chart has some of each. An unbalanced chart (say, too much Fire, not enough Water) creates life patterns — both strengths and struggles.
The “Favorable Element” — Feng Shui’s holy grail
Every Bazi chart has a useful / favorable element (用神) — the one that, when strengthened, makes everything flow better. It’s the key to personalized Feng Shui: colors to wear, stones to carry, directions to face, even careers to pursue.
Rough cheat sheet (over-simplified but useful):
- Need more Wood: green, plants, tall furniture, east direction
- Need more Fire: red, lamps, triangles, south direction
- Need more Earth: yellow, ceramics, crystals, center of the home
- Need more Metal: white/gold, round shapes, metal art, west direction
- Need more Water: blue/black, fountains, mirrors, north direction

How to get your Bazi
- Find your exact birth time (hour matters — Bazi is useless without it).
- Use any free Bazi calculator online (there are dozens).
- Note your Day Master and your current “Luck Pillar” (10-year cycle).
- Identify your favorable element.
- For deep analysis, book a session with a Bazi master — usually $50–$300 USD.
Is Bazi “real”?
Like every astrological system, Bazi is a map, not a cage. It points at probable patterns and natural strengths. What you do with that information — the choices, the practice, the discipline — still shapes your life. Use Bazi to make smarter decisions, not to predict the future.
